The WIMNet database at VicRoads stores over 1 billion records
Transmetric client VicRoads has completed loading all of its vehicle-by-vehicle weigh-in-motion (WIM) records from a 20 year collection program into its WIMNet database and discovered that the number of individual heavy vehicle and axle records inside the database is well in excess of 1 billion.
For the manager at VicRoads Mr Raoul Casagrande, these records represent a "career set" of WIM information that he has been compiling since beginning work in the 1980s, and represent a history of truck loading on Victoria's road system.
To store this much data the Transmetric WIMNet database is designed for "horizontal scalability" allowing users to enter as much data as they have collected, while still maintaining rapid response times to queries through a web browser.
In Australia, Transmetric WIMNet is used to produce the weight information used in the "Auslink" formula for determinining the federal road funding available to state governments.
